UNASUR Presidents endorse Argentine rights over Malvinas Islands PDF Print E-mail

Télam. National News Agency of Argentina. August 10, 2009. The Chiefs-of-State members of the South American Nations Union UNASUR (block made up of Argentina Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Guyana, Peru and Surinam) signed an official statement where they repeated the “support to the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic” on the sovereignty dispute with Great Britain over the islands.  

“The State and Governments Chiefs of UNASUR reiterate their back to the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic on the sovereignty with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and North Ireland referred to the ‘Malvinas Islands issue", according to the text.  

In the manifesto, the leaders remembered the permanent regional interest in which the Governments of the Argentine Republic and United Kingdom of Great Britain and North Ireland renew the negotiations in order to find a peaceful and definitive solution to the dispute over the Malvinas Islands sovereignty,  South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and their marine spaces, in compliance with the resolutions and pertinent declarations of the United Nations Organization (UN) and  the Organization of American States (OAS).
